The original "Runaway Ragdoll" was a sculpture created in 2020 during my junior year of college. Due to the global Covid-19 pandemic, our academic year was entirely online. As a response to the separation from peers, family, and society, I created the Ragdoll as a large, interactive and transient sculpture to explore how we connect with one another, taking up space and building community.
To further explore the concepts of connection and community, I created smaller plushies based on the original sculpture. This allowed people to interact more closely with the project by having their very own Runaway Ragdoll to travel out into the world with. Each doll is hand printed with abstract "maps" representing all the places they may travel, with buttons and felt details sewn on representing the earth and the sky. Each doll is unique with its handmade qualities and features.
The sculpture and the dolls work together to create an art project that goes beyond artist and installation. Everyone with a Runaway Ragdoll plushie is encouraged to travel with their doll, photographing it in all the places they visit and enjoy. Those who participate can send their photos to the runawayragdollco Instagram account for their doll and their travels to be featured!
